Star Cookies from Kate Forgione

  • ¾ lb. butter, softened
  • 2 Egg Yolks
  • ¾ C. Sugar
  • 1 C. pecans, finely chopped
  • ¾ tsp. salt
  • 4 C. flour
  • 1 tsp. Almond Extract
  • 2 Tbs. brandy or other booze
  • Mix soft butter, sugar, and egg yolks until homogeneous; add all other ingredients and mix until a smooth ball is formed
  • Sprinkle a little flour on a cutting board or countertop and flatten the dough ball by hand until you have an even layer about ¾” thick or just slightly shorter than your cookie cutter. (do the same with the left over dough until there is a piece too small to cut a star. Shape this piece into the crescent moon)
  • Use a small star shaped cookie cutter to cut cookies and arrange on an ungreased cookie sheet. (these cookies do not rise or spread so they can be pretty close together)
  • Bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes.
  • Remove from baking sheet and sprinkle with powdered sugar (I use a mesh strainer to do this)
  • Makes about 150 1” stars and one moon.

From Kate: This is my great-grandmother’s recipe. My aunt says the brandy is optional “Because Nana put brandy in everything” but I like the way it turns out with the brandy. I have also tried substituting bourbon for the brandy and had nice results.
